History: 25 years ago – The 2001/02 treble runners-up season (July)

On 27 June 2001, new head coach Klaus Toppmöller and his assistant Peter Hermann led the Werkself out of the changing rooms for their first training session. Joining them as they stepped onto the pitch at training ground 1 were the four new signings: Hans Jörg Butt, Yildiray Bastürk (with special permission from VfL Bochum, as Bayer 04 and VfL had not yet agreed on a transfer fee), Zoltan Sebescen and Michael Zepek, the record holder for appearances for the youth national team.

Throughout the summer break, persistent transfer rumours swirled around Jens Nowotony (to Arsenal), Michael Ballack (to FC Bayern), Diego Placente (to Real Madrid) and Paulo Rink (abroad to England or France). The Brazilian Ze Roberto is said to be “all but certain” (Kicker, 25 June 2001) of a move to Deportivo La Coruña, but in the end, on this sunny June day, they all remained part of the Bayer 04 squad for the 2001/2002 season.

a team with big names

The Werkself played their first friendly of the season away to FV Rheindorf. In this relaxed warm-up match, Ulf Kirsten, Bernd Schneider and Markus Daun each found the back of the net three times. Thomas Brdaric (2 goals), Zoltan Sebescen and Frankie Hejduk, along with an own goal, are the other goalscorers in the 14–0 victory over their neighbours.

When the Bayer 04 squad set off for their training camp in St Gallen, Switzerland, on 3 July, the international players Jens Notowny, Carsten Ramelow, Oliver Neuville and Michael Ballack were also on board. However, the following were absent

reserve keeper Frank Juric, who was confined to bed with a viral infection in his native Australia; Brazilian defender Lucio, who was still away with Brazil; Ze Roberto; and Diego Placente, the Argentine left-back. Lucio was the main talking point, as there were rumours of a €35 million offer for him from Lazio. To the press’s surprise, however, Ze Roberto turns up at Säntispark in Switzerland. Deportivo La Coruña are not prepared to pay the 15 million euros demanded by Bayer 04, so manager Reiner Calmund puts his foot down: “Ze is staying here. I’ve no desire to start haggling.”

pundits have little faith in the Werkself

The Werkself win another friendly against Rot-Weiß Weiler 11–1, and to round off the training camp, Bayer 04 suffer a 3-2 defeat against Liverpool. After eight days in Switzerland, the Black and Reds then set off for Dessau, where Bayer 04 face Hertha Berlin in the first round of the League Cup. On 12 July 2001, Toppmöller’s team lose 2-1 and are able to focus on preparing for the start of the season.

The pundit predictions for the coming season are very poor. Bayer 04 are rarely regarded as contenders for a Champions League finish. While the Werkself had always been among the title favourites in previous years, journalists do not have much faith in the Leverkusen side despite players such as Lucio, Jens Nowotny, Michael Ballack, Carsten Ramelow, Bernd Schneider, Hans Jörg Butt, Yildiray Bastürk, Ulf Kirsten, Oliver Neuville, Boris Zivkovic, Zoltan Sebescen, Ze Roberto, Dimitar Berbatov and Diego Placente. Looking back today, this seems unimaginable given the calibre of those players, but many have lost faith in a strong Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

winning Start against Wolfsburg

Following a 4–1 pre-season win at Swedish side BK Häcken – where centre-back Lucio is still sidelined through injury – and a 2–0 away victory at Offenbacher Kickers, the Werkself are in the final stages of preparation for their first Bundesliga match of the 2001/2002 season. VfL Wolfsburg are the visitors to the BayArena on Saturday, 28 July.

Michael Ballack

Right from the start, the hosts go all out on the attack and barely let the Wolves out of their own half. For an hour, the BayArena – almost sold out with 22,000 spectators – is treated to one-way football. Bernd Schneider, in particular – with his strong running and confident ball control – provided the impetus in Leverkusen’s attacking midfield. Michael Ballack, playing with a broken toe, supported the ‘White Brazilian’ and was replaced by Boris Zivkovic in the 64th minute. At that point, Bayer 04 were leading 2–0 thanks to two goals from Lucio. The final result was an impressive 2–1 win and a strong start to the 2001–2002 season. A season that would go on to be the best ever for a Bayer 04 side until the 2023–2024 campaign, when Leverkusen won the double. Every month, I’ll be taking you back to the story of this fantastic season.

Minas Hantzidis was born on 4 July 1966 in Kettwig, near Essen, and he grew up in Germany. He developed a passion for football at a young age and, whilst still a youth player, moved from Wuppertaler SV to Bayer 04. The attacking and goal-scoring midfielder then made a name for himself in his first senior season at Bayer 04. In the reserve team, he scored goal after goal in the first half of the season, soon began training with the first team and was brought on as a substitute for the first time by manager Erich Ribbeck on 22 November 1985 in a home match against Bayern Munich.

Birthday Boy of the Month 2: Sascha Dum turns 40

Sascha was born on 3 July 1986 in Leverkusen. He is the son of former Bundesliga 2 player Manfred Dum, who mainly scored goals for Union Solingen but also played for FC Saarbrücken, SC Freiburg and Wuppertaler SV. Sascha started playing for the youth teams at HSV Langenfeld at an early age. There, he caught the eye of scouts from Bayer 04 and joined the club at a young age. Following a growth spurt in the U15 team, which forced him to take a nine-month break, the left-footed player finally had the ideal conditions to establish himself in the Bayer 04 youth ranks. Even as an U17 player, he made the leap into the U19 team. Blessed with immense pace, Sascha primarily played in attacking midfield. Not the most technically gifted, but possessing a powerful shot, he found himself training with the first team in the summer of 2005 alongside Gonzalo Castro, while he was still a U19 player.

The Werkself could not have hoped for a better start to the Bundesliga 2 North season in 1976/77. At the end of a week-long training camp in Quickborn, Schleswig-Holstein, coach Willibert Kremer’s side secured two convincing victories over BSC Brunsbüttel (5–0) and TuS Holstein Quickborn (6–0). Following this flying start, Bayer 04 faced a considerably tougher challenge on 23 July 1976 at 19:30 CEST at the Ulrich Haberland Stadium against Bundesliga side Karlsruher SC.

Hans Sarpei was born on 28 June 1976 in Tema, Ghana, and came to Germany with his parents at the age of three, where he grew up in Cologne. Even before he was born, his mother and father worked in Hamburg in the import-export sector. There they met an older man who introduced them to German culture and supported them. Out of gratitude, Hans was later given his first name, although this man died before he was born. Hans comes from a sporting family; his older brother Edward and his nephews Hans Nunoo Sarpei and Kingsley Sarpei were or are also professional footballers.
