From the archives: Six goals in one half

14,000 spectators made their way to the Am Stadtpark Stadium on 23 August 1953. On matchday two in Oberliga 1 West, Bayer 04 entertained FC Köln. Leverkusen had made a false start to the season with a 4-0 defeat at Preußen Münster and were under pressure in this game.

A good defensive performance in the first half gives the Werkself a satisfying 0-0 scoreline against the favourites from the other side of the Rhine. FC Köln, without their star players Hans Schäfer and Jupp Röhrig, are the better team over the whole game but a battling Bayer team opened the scoring through centre forward Fritz Tiede just after the restart. FC Köln reply straightaway. Georg Stollenwerk levels on 53 minutes and then puts his team ahead with two goals to make it 3-1. The Bayer 04 team were not impressed by the hat-trick. Left winger Hans Schultz pulled a goal back. And there are still 15 minutes left to score an equaliser.

Suddenly one attack after the next besieged the Köln goal. Right winger Waldemar Langwagen breaks down the right flank in the last minute and whips in a cross. FC Köln player Stefan Langen tries to clear the ball but to the shock of the Köln team and the unbridled joy of the Leverkusen side he only succeeds in turning the ball into his own net. So, the match ends in a fortunate but not undeserved sharing of the points.
