From the archives: Second division for the first time

On 10 May 1936, 3,000 spectators came to the Am Stadtpark stadium for the final of the Kreisliga district championship. The two champions of the district leagues 1 and 2 in the Rhine-Wupper region played off for promotion to the Lower Rhine district league.

When the team played the first promotion match against Solingen 95, they wore the Bayer Cross on their claret shirts for the first time. A highly focused performance brought a brilliantly played 2-1 victory. Nevertheless, Solingen were considered to be the favourites in the return match.

In brilliant sunshine under blue skies, ten coaches and countless cyclists made their way from Leverkusen to Solingen a week later to support their team. The game ended in a 2-0 victory with two goals from right-winger Friedrich 'Fritz' Schorn. After a defensive tussle for 75 minutes, the two goals were netted within three minutes to put our 'Sportverinigung' in the second division for the first time.
