From the archives: Promotion to Second Bundesliga North

Relegation is always annoying but the one in 1973 from the Regional League West to the Middle Rhine Association League doubly so because there is no promotion possible in the following season. The DFB turned five Regional Leagues into two Second Bundesliga divisions, North and South below the top division of the Bundesliga so that Bayer disappear for at least two years into the amateur game.

The team unfortunately are unable to win the Middle Rhine championship in the first year but they do take part in the finals of the German Amateur Championship. SC Flensburg are knocked out in the first round but our team failed to make it past the second round: Victoria Hamburg are just too strong. In the second season in the Association League, promotion to the Second Bundesliga North is the big target. The Middle Rhine title is won and our team picks up three wins in the play-off matches against Union Solingen and Arminia Hannover – Leverkusen celebrate the return to professional football.

Bayer 04 TV brings you highlights of the crucial play-off matches for the Second Bundesliga North.
