There is great anticipation ahead of the first competitive match of the new season following on from four friendlies plus numerous sessions at the training camp as well as in Leverkusen.
The match will be broadcast live on SAT.1 and Sky. Fans can keep up-to-date with the action via the text commentary on bayer04.de and on the Bayer 04 app. In addition, Werkself Radio will be broadcasting live with Niko Hartmann and Cedric Pick providing commentary and comments as usual.
If the scores are level at full-time the game at the BayArena will go straight to a penalty shootout.
Yellow cards will not be counted after the game. Two yellow cards will lead to a suspension for the Supercup in the following season. The DFB Sports tribunal will become involved if any red cards are shown.
The German Football League (DFL) has presented a trophy to the winners of the annual Supercup since the competition was relaunched in 2010. The trophy shows arms holding a chrome ball with a diameter of 19 centimetres. The sterling silver finish symbolises competition for the Bundesliga title and the fine gold finish for the DFB Pokal.
The Supercup has been won 15 times by the champions of Germany and nine times by the Pokal winners. If the Werkself win the match then Bayer 04 will be the ninth club to win the Supercup.
The Supercup was first held in 1987 under the jurisdiction of the German Football Association (DFB). After a gap of over ten years, the DFL has organised Supercup since 2010.
The 25th Supercup is being played in Leverkusen for the second time. Back in 1993, the Werkself as DFB Pokal winners of the previous season faced the champions Werder Bremen. The Werkself lost to Werder on penalties at the Ulrich Haberland Stadium.
