Euro 2024 in Germany – Völler: 'Both presentations were good'

And the winner is: Germany! For a second time after 1998 Germany is to be the venue for the European Championship finals. The application of the German Football Association (DFB) was preferred to the application from Turkey in the allocation of Euro 2024 on Thursday.

"I had a certain insight early on and I knew the DFB had done their homework. Both presentations were good but in the end we won out against Turkey," said Rudi Völler who was present at the award ceremony at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. "Now we can all look forward to a great European Championship in Germany in 2024."
The finals of Euro 2020, to be played in 12 countries, will include matches in Germany. Confirmed venues for EURO 2024 are Berlin, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Köln, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart.
Including the World Cup tournaments in 1974 and 2006, this will be the fourth big men's tournament held in Germany. The Federal Republic also staged the women's World Cup in 2011 with four of the games played in Leverkusen including a quarter-final. The women's European Championship finals have twice been held in Germany (1989 and 2001).

Season review 2025/26, part II: Highs and lows of an eventful season

Lying third in the Bundesliga, the Werkself made a faltering start in 2026 after the winter break, but gradually rediscovered winning ways and, as in the previous campaign, were among the top 16 in Europe and the top four in the DFB Pokal. In the Bundesliga, the Werkself also remained in the race for Champions League qualification right to the end. However, because setbacks repeatedly crept into the Werkself's performances between good displays and crucial games, it was not quite enough to secure a UCL spot in the end. A season with many ups and downs brought sixth place and qualification for the UEFA Europa League. Part II of the review of the 2025/26 season.

2025/26 season review, part I: Upheaval, change, euphoria

Following the final match of the 2025/26 season, the prevailing feeling was naturally one of disappointment after missing out on qualification for the Champions League. The Werkself finished the Bundesliga in sixth place, meaning they'll start the 2026/27 campaign in the Europa League. "But to talk negatively about everything now because of that would be wrong," stressed captain Robert Andrich following the final game, knowing that the past year at Bayer 04 was marked, more than almost any other, by the start of a new era and the courage to change – and in particular, the belief in a positive direction. Everyone was aware this process would need time. The first part of the 2025/26 season review.
