Based on official Bundesliga match data, 40 players were picked out who have particularly impressed in the current season - eight of them part of the Werkself side who were crowned German champions last weekend!
The nominated players from the Bayer 04 squad are goalkeeper and captain Lukas Hradecky, defenders Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo, midfield trio Granit Xhaka, Exequiel Palacios and Florian Wirtz as well as striker Victor Boniface.
A jury will decide which Bundesliga players make the cut for the Team of the Season. This is comprised of - in line with the monthly Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month awards - firstly a panel of experts (30% weighting), to which the Bundesliga Legends Network and selected media partners belong. Alongside the expert panel, the fans also have a strong say in the vote (40%), with the remaining 30% coming from the team captains of the 18 Bundesliga clubs.
The top 11 players will become part of the Bundesliga Team of the Season presented by EA Sports and receive considerably enhanced stats in FIFA 23.
Four Bayer 04 players are in action at the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations being played in Morocco from 21 December to 18 January 2026: Eliesse Ben Seghir for the hosts, Edmond Tapsoba with Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Maza for Algeria and Christian Kofane with Cameroon. After a week in the Algarve, the Bayer 04 Women returned home on Saturday afternoon. The Werkself had six training sessions, two friendlies and a lot of time together as a team. Roberto Pätzold's team will be back in action in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga next Friday for the start of matchday 15.

"We didn’t make the right decision at the right moments," said captain Robert Andrich after the 1-0 defeat away to TSG Hoffenheim, where Bayer 04 endeavoured to control the game but failed to score. No points in the Kraichgau: the Werkself lost 1-0 away to top-six rivals TSG Hoffenheim on Bundesliga Matchday 18. Wouter Burger scored the only goal with a free kick in the ninth minute. In an uneventful contest, the Werkself tried hard to find an equaliser but were repeatedly thwarted.
