Demirbay expressed his inability to understand a decision by referee Dr. Felix Brych in a TV interview following the Bundesliga match at VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday 20 March. Brych showed the 28-year-old a yellow card following a flare-up involving several players on 82 minutes. It was was the tenth booking for the Germany international this season; Demirbay is now suspended for the Bundesliga home game against Hertha Berlin on Saturday 2 April.

The Werkself conceded a goal at home for the first time since the beginning of January 67 minutes into the game against FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday. Rüdiger Vollborn has been at the club for 40 years, he holds the record number of Bundesliga appearances for the club (401) and is the only Bayer 04 player to have won both the UEFA Cup (1988) and the DFB Pokal (1993).
