Birthday boy of the month: Helmut Richert
Helmut ‘Bello’ Richert was born on 23 July 1941. He joined Leverkusen in 1966 from the champions of Germany 1860 Munich although he did not play a match in the title-winning season.
The attacking midfielder, who sometimes played as a centre forward at Leverkusen, made 66 appearances for our club in two years in league games in the Regional League West and he scored 28 goals. In his second season, Bayer 04 won the title and just missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga.
Richert left Leverkusen to join Fortuna Düsseldorf. There he played and trained to be a coach and in the following years he went on to manage MTV Ingolstadt, Jahn Regensburg, Holstein Kiel as well as the Liechtenstein capital club FC Vaduz. Helmut Richert now lives in Munich. Many happy returns on your 80th birthday, Bello.

Boris Zivkovic was born on 15 November 1975 in the Bosnian town of Zivinice, which is now part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He played for FK Sarajevo at a young age. However, his youth was characterised by the turmoil of the wars in the former Yugoslavia. At the age of just 17, he was also called up and took part in the fighting - a fate shared by many young men of his generation.
