He was in goal six times in the Bundesliga and twice in the UEFA Cup in the following years. On 10 February 2007, in a home game against Eintracht Frankfurt, he went in goal for the Werkself in place of number one keeper Jörg Butt who was sent off on 39 minutes for handling the ball outside the box. A week later, in the home game against Hannover 96, he played again before the meteoric rise of René Adler started with the away game at Schalke. Bene remained an important part of the goalkeeping set-up at Bayer 04 for the next few years. He was out of action for a long time in 2009 with a knee injury. When Bene fought his way back to fitness all the goalkeeping spots at Bayer 04 were taken and he was without work for a year in 2011. He had trials for Mainz 05 in August but was not taken on. And other offers did not come at first.
He was signed by FC Saarbrücken in 2012. After a season with the Black and Blues, Bene moved on to the Regional League West to play for Sportfreunde Lotte where he was the number one keeper with the exception of a two-month break in 2015 when he played for SV Elversberg. In 2016 he was promoted to the third division with the Sportfreunde and he played against the Werkself twice in the DFB Pokal. In the first match against his former club in 2015 in the first round he could not do much about the defeat. In the second meeting a year later in the second round, he became a big hero when he saved the penalties taken by Kevin Volland and Julian Baumgartlinger that put his team in the Round of 16 of the DFB Pokal. Lotte then also beat 1860 Munich. They went out in the quarter-finals against the eventual winners Borussia Dortmund.

Benedikt Fernandez ended his playing career in 2018. In the last match of the season he played against newly promoted FC Magdeburg. A serious cartilage injury ended his career. He was employed by Sportfreunde Lotte for the following years, first as the goalkeeping coach with the first team and later as coach of the second team.
Bene had to work hard on a lot of things as a goalkeeper and he did not overreach himself. Nevertheless he is one of the very few in one of the very talented Bayer 04 youth teams in 1985 to progress to playing professionally.
Dear Bene, I wish you many happy returns and above all health on your 40th birthday. Have a great time and enjoy your day.

Christoph Daum was born on 24 October 1953 in Zwickau. As a child, he moved to West Germany with his mother and grew up in Duisburg. He developed a great enthusiasm for football at an early age, even though it soon became clear that his future lay less on the pitch than on the sidelines. Even at a young age, his passion for analysing, explaining and improving things became apparent.

When the Bayer 04 players celebrated Christmas in 1960, they spent the winter in second place in the Oberliga West 2 on 20 points - but already five points behind leaders Schwarz-Weiß Essen. However, coach Erich Garske's team are struggling to get back on track in the new year. A goalless draw against Bonner FV at home at the Ulrich Haberland Stadium was followed by a 2-1 away defeat in Erkenschwick. The following home game also yielded just one point. As a result, the team's promotion ambitions dwindled to a minimum, as the gap to the coveted spot has now grown to a challenging ten points.

As league leaders, the Werkself welcomed the relegation-threatened team from Rhenania Würselen. On 4 February 1951, 5,000 spectators line the touchlines despite the Sunday carnival parades. And they see a home team that is superior on the pitch. Without Theo Kirchberg, who was ill, and Emil Becks, who was suspended, the hosts attacked the opposing goal from the start. Battling against a strong wind in the first half, Bayer 04 created chance after chance, but were repeatedly thwarted by the Würselen goalkeeper. With the score at 0-0 at half-time, Karl Heinz Spikofski tried his luck on 55 minutes and hammered the ball into the opposition net from 20 metres out. Rhenania can no longer counterattack. The siege of the Würselen penalty area continued right to the end, but the game ended in a narrow 1-0 win.
