Birthday boy of the month 1: Harry Gniech turns 75

Harry Gniech was born on 14 October 1951 in Leverkusen-Schlebusch. At the age of six, he joined SV Bayer 04, initially in the athletics section. The boy actually wanted to play football, but was only allowed to switch to the football team when he turned nine. Harry quickly established himself as a playmaker in midfield. Despite his talent, the path from the youth team to the first-team squad was a long one back then. In the 1973–74 season, his former U19 coach, Friedhelm Renno – who was by then in charge of Bayer 04’s first team – selected him for his first match with the professional squad.

However, during the match in Spich, he was substituted at half-time and remained with the amateur side until 1978. He became their captain, trained as an industrial clerk and completed his military service with the Bundeswehr. Harry then went on to study business administration.

At the age of 26, he had effectively given up on professional football. But in 1978, manager Willibert Kremer asked him to help Bayer 04 in their battle to avoid relegation from Bundesliga 2. Harry seized his chance: on 29 April 1978, he played his first Bundesliga 2 match against Tennis Borussia Berlin. Bayer went on to win the following four matches with him in the starting line-up and climbed from 15th to 8th place. Harry was offered a professional contract and, alongside his career as a footballer, he worked in the legal department of Bayer AG.

A hard-working runner who put the team first

During the 1978–79 season, he became a key pillar of the team. Right from the opening match against Fortuna Köln, Harry scored the first goal of the season. The Werkself won the match 3–1 and kicked off a run of nine victories. The Leverkusen-born player featured in the starting line-up 14 times in a row across two seasons – and won every one of those matches. Kremer rated his hard-working, tactically disciplined and team-oriented midfielder highly.

His team-mates, too, ssw him as a key part of their success. Jürgen Gelsdorf describes him as the “final piece of the jigsaw” for the team. Matthias Brücken particularly praised Harry’s willingness to put the team first. He played in 32 of the 38 matches that season and was there to witness Bayer 04’s promotion to the Bundesliga.

He made a further 22 appearances in the Bundesliga. He particularly remembers his first match at the Olympic Stadium in Munich against Bayern Munich. In his first Bundesliga home match against Hertha Berlin, Harry was in the starting line-up and he set up the first goal in a 2–1 win.

In his second Bundesliga season, the now 29-year-old was reduced to being a substitute. His contract was not renewed. He turned down offers from other Bundesliga 2 clubs because he wanted to keep his job at Bayer AG. In 1981, after more than two decades at Bayer 04, he moved on to Viktoria Köln. He later went on to play for TuRa Wermelskirchen. Harry ended his playing career at the age of 36 and subsequently played for the Bayer 04 veterans’ team.

To this day, he remains close friends with many of his former team-mates, who he regularly meets up with. He also remains active in sport: he plays tennis and has resumed training with the athletics section of TSV Bayer 04.

Harry turns 75 this month. The father of two daughters and grandfather of four is the first Bayer 04 Bundesliga player to be born in Leverkusen and to have come through the club’s own youth ranks; for that reason alone, he will forever be a legend.

Dear Harry, I wish you all the best on your 75th birthday. Stay well and have a lovely celebration with your family.

From the archives: 60 years ago – The strike

In the first week of October 1966, professional footballers decided to take an unusual step – they went on strike. They felt compelled to resort to this action, which was relatively uncommon until then, to give greater weight to their demands for fair pay. They reasoned that, with three draws, they were entitled to a bonus; at the very least, a points bonus of 75 Deutschmarks that was agreed before the start of the season.
