Koch played for several of Bayer 04's youth teams up to U19 level. He went on to make a total of 213 Bundesliga appearances for Fortuna Düsseldorf, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, MSV Duisburg and DSC Arminia Bielefeld. He spent a season in Bundesliga 2 with FC Energie Cottbus.
Koch, who also had spells abroad for Dinamo Zagreb and Rapid Wien and played in the UEFA Champions League with PSV Eindhoven, reached the DFB Cup final with Kaiserslautern in 2003. After retiring, he began a coaching career and was most recently goalkeeping coach at third-tier club FC Viktoria Köln.
Bayer 04 face Hamburger SV for the first time since February 2018 in their rearranged Bundesliga Matchday 17 clash. After long years in the second division, the Red Shorts have gradually reestablished themselves in the top flight this season, thanks in particular to their strong home record and third-best tackle success rate in the league.
