Falko Götz: ‘Very happy the move proved to be a success’

As a very promising talent with the GDR record champions BFC Dynamo, Falko Götz dreamt of trying his luck in West Germany early on. Ahead of a European Cup tie in Belgrade, the then 21-year-old together with his teammate Dirk Schlegel slipped away from the rest of the team on 3 November 1983 – and that was followed by an equally adventurous as dangerous flight from Yugoslavia to Germany plus the desired big career in football.

In the fourth part of our series ‘30 years of reunification’, Falko Götz explains in an interview (in German) with Bayer 04 TV his flight, his years in the West at Bayer 04 Leverkusen and his pioneer role for other football players from East Germany…

Bayer 04 Women finish season in fifth after defeat to Bremen

Bayer 04 Women have finished in fifth place after the best Bundesliga season in the club's history in terms of points. Roberto Pätzold's side went down 3-1 at home to SV Werder Bremen on the final matchday. With 46 points and 15 wins, they've bettered the previous record campaign of 2024/25. Despite periods of pressure, Cornelia Kramer's 73rd-minute strike was not enough at the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion, and the Werkself miss out on European qualification despite a strong end to the season.
