Werkself lose 3-1 to Wolfsburg in home opener

Deep dismay and disappointment for Bayer 04: After the defeat against Mönchengladbach in the opening match of the season, the Werkself lost their first home game 3-1 against VfL Wolfsburg. Leon Bailey put Leverkusen in front (24’) before the in-form visitors levelled with Yannick Gerhardt finding the back of the net (36’). Wolfsburg pulled clear after half-time, with Wout Weghorst (55’) and Renato Steffen (60’) on target.

'We won't underestimate Wolfsburg'

The first home game of the new season is here: This Saturday sees VfL Wolfsburg visit the BayArena in a 15.30 CET kick-off. On paper, the Werkself face the team in fifth place – but after just one game in the Bundesliga campaign the table has little bearing at the moment. However, the team from Lower Saxony have got off to a good start with a 2-1 home win against last season's runners-up Schalke 04.

Shooting practice order of the day at the Bayarena

Three days before the first home game of the season, it was time for the next training session for Heiko Herrlich and his players on Wednesday afternoon – it was the final open session before the encounter with Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon (1 September, 15.30 CET). After yesterday's two strenuous sessions the Werkself primarily worked on recovery today – albeit with full concentration on shooting practice again.
