The fact Niklas Lomb ended up between the sticks is thanks to his godfather who once gave him a grey goalkeeper’s shirt with his first name on the back for Christmas. Lomb then changed to being a keeper with the youngsters at SC West Köln. He joined the Bayer 04 U17 squad in 2008 and, after loan spells at Halle, Münster and Sandhausen, he returned in 2019. He is an ambitious and loyal member of the goalkeeping set-up and he has his own ambitions too. Lomb played his first competitive match in goal for the Werkself in December 2012 in the Europa League home game against Rosenborg – and he kept a clean sheet in the 1-0 win. Two Bundesliga appearances followed in the 2020/21 season.
The Ulrich Haberland Cup finally returned to the Kurt-Rieß-Anlage after the traditional fan tournament, which is organised by the Nordkurve12, had to be cancelled the last two years due to the pandemic. A total of 20 teams competed in the vicinity of the BayArena, with Werkself players Robert Andrich and Niklas Lomb among those watching on.
