Goal fest for U10s and U11s

The youth teams build momentum in preparation for the new season. The U10s and U11s one their friendlies by double figures. The U12's started with a tournament in Holland.

Friendly: Bayer 04 U10 v JFS Köln 19-1
The U10s were full of fun and tempo at the Academy and they quickly established a lead early on. The Bayer 04 lads ended up securing a runaway victory.

Friendly: Bayer 04 U11 v VfL Bochum 12-2
The first third against physically and skillfully strong VfL team developed into a fast-paced encounter with lots of goalscoring opportunities for both sides. The Werkself took quick to nil lead but Bochum fought back to level before the first break.

The Bayer 04 lads gradually took control in the following two thirds and were able to achieve a clear win in the end.

U12 tournament in Sleeuwijk (NL):Fourth place
For the U12s it was the first chance in Sleeuwijk to play on a big pitch and the Bayer 04 lads performed really well in the 11-a-side match. After three wins and one defeat against Dutch teams they faced Twente Enschede in the semi-finals.

The Dutch side came out on top with a 3-1 win meaning the Werkself lads went through to the third-place play-off. It was an evenly balanced match against FC Zwolle with neither side able to win the game in normal time. The exciting penalty shootout ended in a narrow for-three defeat for the U12s.

Rüdiger Vollborn has been at the club for 40 years, he holds the record number of Bundesliga appearances for the club (401) and is the only Bayer 04 player to have won both the UEFA Cup (1988) and the DFB Pokal (1993). And the Berliner stayed with the Werkself after ending his impressive playing career as he worked as a goalkeeping coach for the following nine years. From special edition jerseys to fan banners, the home game against Mainz 05 was all about the many Bayer 04 fan clubs. Accordingly, a fitting tribute to the long-standing Werkself supporters was not to be missed during half-time in the Bundesliga match. Fernando Carro, CEO, honoured the up to 50-year anniversaries of six fan clubs in front of the coaches' benches at the BayArena.

1-1 draw with Mainz 05 - late strike secures a point

A late goal secured a point for Bayer 04 at home to FSV Mainz 05 in a match that saw the Black and Reds dominant in the second half. Despite lots of possession, the Werkself initially found few gaps and fell behind after 67 minutes when Sheraldo Becker scored in a Mainz counter-attack. In the closing stages, Leverkusen threw everything forward once again and equalised through Jarell Quansah (88').
