The Welt am Sonntag reports: "After the important win in the Champions League during the week, Bayer went on to beat Darmstadt 3-2 in the league. Driven on by the impressive Hakan Calhanoglu, who scored the opening goal on 32 minutes, the Werkself overcame a very defensive side from Rhineland Hessen to pick up three points."
Under the headline ‘A week full of wins', the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung states: "Bayer Leverkusen are gradually coming out of the sporting doldrums that took on strange forms at times. At the end of a busy week of fixtures, Bayer clocked up a third victory in their third competitive match. However, Leverkusen needed an hour to break down the resistance of the underdogs in the 3-2 win against Darmstadt."
The Tagesspiegel cited the growing maturity of the Bayer 04 team in its reporting: "In contrast to last season Darmstadt were unable to resist the growing pressure. (…) The resistance of Darmstadt was finally broken when Aránguiz scored his goal to make it 3-1. The goal from Vrancic came too late."
The Bild am Sonntag analysis of the Darmstadt match detects a bounce for the Bayer 04 international players called up by national coach Joachim Löw: "Bayer's young guns win with Jogi bounce! Jogi Löw was so impressed by Leverkusen's performance at Wembley that he called up five Bayer 04 players (Leno, Brandt, Tah, Volland and Henrichs) for the matches against San Marino and Italy. The phone call from the national coach surprised Benjamin Henrichs (19) (..) Equally boosted by lures invitation, Brandt set up the opening goal for Calhanoglu (32') and made it 2-1 himself on 56 minutes."
The Sonntags Express declares: "Bayer from Hell to Heaven. Bayer's class cuts down Darmstadt too. Calhanoglu's shot, Brandt's headed goal and the rifled volley from Aránguiz were enough to secure all three points. (…) The goals from Colak and Vrancic could have been avoided. Bayer 04 were superior at the end of the day with 70 per cent possession."
A group of journalists representing Latin American and Spanish-language media outlets visited the BayArena on Thursday for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Bayer 04 and interviews with key personnel that have driven the team’s brand to new heights internationally over the last few years.
