The Swiss striker joined Leverkusen from FC Nürnberg in 2014/15 and he went on to make 25 appearances in the Bundesliga scoring six goals for Bayer 04. Drmic moved on to Borussia eighteen months later but has experienced a tough time with injuries.

Josip, the most important question first, how are you?
Drmic: I’m better than I was a couple of months ago. I’ve had a difficult time but now I’m back in full training and ready to play again. You have to take it day by day after a long time out injured and fully control your work rate. But, all in all, I’m very, very well.

How was it in rehab – cartilage damage can be really tough?
Drmic: It was very difficult and a hard and long process. I had to be very patient , mentally strong and always try to remain positive. But you can say I learned a lot and picked up some very important experiences.

The game against your former club Bayer 04 would be a perfect time to make your come back in the starting eleven. What are the chances?
Drmic: All I want is to play for at least a few minutes as I’ve really appreciated every minute on the pitch recently. I think I've got a good way to go before being in the starting eleven again. However, I hope everything goes well for our team on Saturday. The last match at Leverkusen wasn't so great…

The first half of the season hasn't lived up to expectations. What are the reasons for that?
Drmic: In the past few years we've had lots of great times, such as our competing in the Champions League. After a good start to the season the results stopped coming and we unfortunately didn't manage to turn it round. But sitting in the stands and looking on without being to help was obviously not a good situation.

What's changed under Dieter Hecking?
Drmic: Of course, there are a number of changes with new coaches. Every coach has particular ideas that we have to implement as a team. It's gone very well from the first meeting, the training sessions are interesting and it's great fun working with him. Now it's down to us to produce success on the pitch.

What do you think the game against Bayer 04 will be like?
Drmic: I think it will be a very exciting match. Obviously, given the positions in the league, it’s not a top of the table clash but we’re not far behind Leverkusen. However, we do know their and our qualities. When you look at the potential of the two teams then we’re both at a similar high level as was evident in the last meeting. I think the game will be a good challenge for both sides.

Whose hand will you shake first on Saturday? Are you still in contact with anybody at Leverkusen?
Drmic: To be honest. I’ve no idea! I know nearly everybody there. Of course, there are a couple of new faces but I’ll say hello to everyone. Above all, I’m looking forward to meeting up with the players I used to play alongside as I don’t see them very often now. And there are also members of staff who were always very good to me. I’m looking forward to being back at the club as it’s not just any club but rather Leverkusen – part of my past
