2021/22 Bundesliga season: Opener in the capital

Bayer 04 start the 42nd Bundesliga season in the club's history with an away game at Union Berlin. The first match at the BayArena is against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Werkself season finale against SC Freiburg is on 14 May 2022.

The new Bayer 04 head coach Gerardo Seoane will welcome his squad for the start of the pre-season on 5 July. And now it is clear which opponents Charles Aránguiz and Co. will open the 2021/22 black and red season against: Last season's surprise team Union Berlin. That is followed by matches against Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Augsburg and Borussia Dortmund.

The first meeting with champions Bayern Munich is on matchday eight in the middle of October and is followed a week later by the derby at FC Köln (22 to 24 October).

THREE-WEEK Winter break

Bayer 04 finish 2021 with an away game at SC Freiburg just before Christmas. After the three-week break, league action returns on the weekend of 7 to 9 January with the home game against Union Berlin. The last match of the season for the Werkself is against SC Freiburg on 14 May.

Bayer 04 extend contract with Germany U19 international Montrell Culbreath to 2030

Bayer 04 Leverkusen have extended the contract with Germany U19 international Montrell Culbreath. The attacking midfielder and right winger has penned a deal with the Bundesliga club that runs to 30 June 2030. Culbreath has played for the Werkself as a youth player since 2023. Last December, he scored his first Bundesliga goal for the Leverkusen first team in the Bayer 04 3-1 away win at RB Leipzig.

Werkself review #B04VIL: ‘A major interim goal’ achieved with a lot of control

The Werkself's 3-0 victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League certainly left many happy faces: Malik Tillman was delighted with his brace, Robert Andrich with the clean sheet and coach Kasper Hjulmand with the "manner" of this significant home win. With an overwhelming superiority and over 75 per cent possession at times, Bayer 04 deserved their place in the UCL play-off round. They will face a familiar foe in February. The Werkself review.
