Transfer for the future: Frimpong signs for Bayer 04

Bayer 04 have signed the Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong. The Holland U20 international joins the Werkself from Scottish champions Celtic. The 20-year-old has signed a contract at Leverkusen to 30 June 2025.

"In Jeremie Frimpong, we have been able to sign a player with a great facility to develop and this again is a forward-looking transfer for Bayer 04. He's technically strong, incredibly quick and has the desire to go forwards," declared sporting director Simon Rolfes. "Over the last year and a half, Jeremie has proved himself at an absolute top club in the physically very challenging Scottish league and in European competition. That important experience at Celtic, but above all his footballing ability, make him a very attractive young player."

From the perspective of Leverkusen's sporting managing director Rudi Völler, "We have completed a transfer completely in the spirit of Bayer 04 with the signing of Jeremie Frimpong. Young, accomplished on the ball, versatile, with top pace and a very lively style of play – players like that fit in with the way we want to perform on the pitch," said Völler. "If Jeremie continues in the same way in the coming years with the consistency he has shown up to now then he could be an important part of our team."

Frimpong: "I really like the way Bayer 04 play"

For the 20-year-old right-footer, the move to Bayer 04 represents a "great opportunity to be able to play in one of the best leagues in Europe," said Frimpong who will wear the number 30 shirt for Leverkusen. "I'm totally looking forward to the Bundesliga and, of course, this club in particular. Bayer 04 Leverkusen have regularly been in the Champions League and the Europa League. They demonstrated their ambition on the European stage last year in the two games against Glasgow Rangers," said Frimpong who came through the youth ranks at the English Premier League club Manchester City. "I really like the offensive, fast and technical style of play at Bayer 04 and I hope I can soon help the team."

Season review 2025/26, part II: Highs and lows of an eventful season

Lying third in the Bundesliga, the Werkself made a faltering start in 2026 after the winter break, but gradually rediscovered winning ways and, as in the previous campaign, were among the top 16 in Europe and the top four in the DFB Pokal. In the Bundesliga, the Werkself also remained in the race for Champions League qualification right to the end. However, because setbacks repeatedly crept into the Werkself's performances between good displays and crucial games, it was not quite enough to secure a UCL spot in the end. A season with many ups and downs brought sixth place and qualification for the UEFA Europa League. Part II of the review of the 2025/26 season.

2025/26 season review, part I: Upheaval, change, euphoria

Following the final match of the 2025/26 season, the prevailing feeling was naturally one of disappointment after missing out on qualification for the Champions League. The Werkself finished the Bundesliga in sixth place, meaning they'll start the 2026/27 campaign in the Europa League. "But to talk negatively about everything now because of that would be wrong," stressed captain Robert Andrich following the final game, knowing that the past year at Bayer 04 was marked, more than almost any other, by the start of a new era and the courage to change – and in particular, the belief in a positive direction. Everyone was aware this process would need time. The first part of the 2025/26 season review.
