The 22-year-old was taken to hospital in Buenos Aires after a bad foul by his opponent who jumped into Palacios's back with his knee. The medical department at Bayer 04 is in close contact with the Argentinian doctors. Palacios will initially remain in the Argentina capital for further treatment.
"Exequiel is in good hands and our doctors will keep in close contact. But we will bring him back to Leverkusen as soon as possible so he can start rehab in our Werkstatt where we have the best options for his speedy recovery," said Bayer 04 sporting director Simon Rolfes. "For us, but obviously particularly for Exequiel, it's a heavy blow. We will give him all the support he needs to come back stronger from this serious injury."
Werkself player Montrell Culbreath and Bayer 04 loanee Francis Onyeka are part of Germany's final squad for the U19 European Championships this summer. The tournament is in Wales from 24 June to 12 July.

Bayer 04 are away to third-division club SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the 2026/27 DFB Pokal. That was the outcome of the draw on Saturday night, 6 June, at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. The Werkself first round tie will be played between 21 and 24 August. The highlight will be the official season opener on 8 August at the BayArena, including a friendly against La Liga club Sevilla. Friendlies in Germany will take the team to neighbouring Monheim, Offenbach and Jena.
