Florian Wirtz has already secured one or two entries in the Black and Red history books. For example, in June 2020 he became the youngest player to score in the club’s history at the age of 17 years, one month and three days. The Werkself number 27 is still second in the ranking of the youngest goalscorers in the Bundesliga behind BVB Youssoufa Moukoko.
The rapid rise of the Pulheim-born player has continued this season: The youngster not only developed into a regular first choice but also became a key player in the side. Wirtz was always in the starting eleven from matchday four and was directly involved in 24 goals (10 goals, 14 assists) in 31 games.
Although the season came to an early end for the 19-year-old after matchday 25, the incredible performance before his torn cruciate have rightly earned Wirtz a place in the EA Sports Team of the Season. Congratulations, Flo.
The 2021/22 Bundesliga Team of the Season: Neuer - Raum, Davies, Ndicka, Schlotterbeck, Kimmich, Bellingham, Wirtz, Nkunku, Haaland, Lewandowski.
Over the years, his hat was his trademark on the Leverkusen training ground: The Werkself players plus coaches and sporting managing director Rudi Völler said farewell to the long-standing Bayer 04 groundsman Georg Nestmann before the Friday training session. Achilles, his nickname at Bismarckstraße, is starting a well-deserved retirement, all the best and thank you for everything!

The fans from Britain had booked a tour of the BayArena this afternoon – and they received a surprise during their visit: Werkself head coach Gerardo Seoane dropped by to meet the UK fan club members and he was happy to answer one or two questions and meet all requests for photos.

It took exactly 60 minutes for the Werkself to take the lead through a perfectly finished counter-attack by Patrik Schick in the first leg of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League play-off at Olympiacos. Referring to the meeting in the league phase and the initially squandered opportunities, coach Kasper Hjulmand said afterwards: "I thought: 'Oh no, déjà-vu.'" But after the opening goal, it took just 144 seconds for the Czech to spark more wild celebrations among those in black and red in the Greek cauldron, when Schick nodded in Alejandro Grimaldo's corner. Much to the delight of the Bayer 04 fans, his teammates and his coach, who had warm words for the striker in the aftermath. The Werkself Review.
