The former media director at Hamburg SV will coordinate the myriad of complex processes around the Leverkusen first team to maximise the mutual effect of the different sections at the Werkself.
"Demands on the coaching and support staff have grown enormously in the recent past due to specialisation. We have taken that into account," said sporting director Rudi Völler. "Jörn Wolf will act as a lynchpin in the processes between the different parts of the coaching staff, the physiotherapy and psychological sections as well as the remaining support staff. We are looking to improve the efficiency across all sections."
For head coach Roger Schmidt the creation of the new position is "the result of two and a half years successful cooperation that we have constantly analysed and assessed. The engagement of Jörn Wolf with his wide experience of the football business is an ideal appointment," said Schmidt. "Jörn's job will be to liaise between the specialists in the various sections. The target is to make full use of the potential of the many specialists and create ideal conditions for our team."
Sandwiched between their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off tie against Olympiacos, Bayer 04 return to Bundesliga action on Saturday with a trip to Union Berlin (kick-off: 15:30 CET). Referring to the meeting in the league phase and the initially squandered opportunities, coach Kasper Hjulmand said afterwards: "I thought: 'Oh no, déjà-vu.'"
