Against Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup 87/88: Reinhardt's bull's-eye

This clash was one of the milestones for the Werkself on the way to winning the UEFA Cup in 1987/88: Bayer 04 beat Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen in the semi-final first leg 32 years ago today. The winning goal in the 1-0 victory was scored by a player who wasn't known as a goalscorer.

For that reason, the man of the match Alois Reinhardt declared after the final whistle: "It was definitely the most important goal of my career and an incredibly emotional moment for me." The defender found the back of the net on 61 minutes to open the scoring with the help of the inside of the post. The return leg in Bremen ended goalless – to the joy of the Werkself as they reached the final of the UEFA Cup. More about that later.
