Bayer 04 have strengthened the first team squad as the transfer window closes. The Werkself have signed the Mexico international Javier Hernandez from Manchester United. Hernandez, who went out on loan to Real Madrid from the ‘Red Devils’ last season scoring nine goals and providing nine assists, signed for Leverkusen to 30 June 2018. Hernandez, who will wear the number 7 shirt for Bayer 04, joined Manchester United in 2010. For the current club of the Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, ‘Chicharito’ (‘little pea’), as the 27-year-old as known across the globe, played 157 competitive games scoring 59 goals and providing 20 assists along the way.

“With this signing, we have adjusted and significantly increased the strength of our squad in preparation for the tough challenges we’ll face in the coming months,” declared Bayer 04 CEO Michael Schade. “After qualifying for the Champions League group stage we wanted to show our intentions up front. We have succeeded with that by bringing in Javier Hernandez.”

And sporting director Rudi Völler sees Hernandez, who has scored 40 goals in 74 appearances for Mexico to date, as a major addition to the Leverkusen strike force. “He’s a lively. mobile and quick striker who can combine well and has a good technique and the ability to finish,” said Völler. “In ‘Chicharito’ we have more options and are more unpredictable. I’m really happy he’s decided to join Bayer 04. The Bundesliga can look forward to watching another great player.”

For the 1.74 metre tall striker the move to Bayer 04 represents a special challenge: “I know two of the top three leagues in Europe having played in the English Premier League and the Primera Division in Spain. Now I want to get to know the Bundesliga,” explained Chicharito, “as I’ve heard a lot about the fantastic stadiums in Germany and the unique fans. The Bundesliga is very much full of attacking teams and that really attracts me. It’s a miracle that I can play for a club like Leverkusen who I know from the Champions League. Bayer 04 represents a great chance for me and I’d like to achieve things while I’m here.
