Bayer 04 have signed the Brazilian left back Wendell Nascimento Borges – known as Wendell – from Gremio Porto Alegre for the start of next season. The 20-year-old left-footed defender (1.76 metres, 64 kilos) has agreed a five-year deal to 30 June 2019.
"Wendell is a very talented player who play can help strengthen our squad. We're convinced he can continue the tradition of top Brazilian players at Bayer 04 Leverkusen," declared Bayer 04 sporting director Rudi Völler, who watched the 20-year-old play on Tuesday in Brazil, accompanied by assistant coach Daniel Niedzkowski and before the contact was signed, in a 3-0 win against Atletico Nacional (Columbia) in the Copa Libertadores – the Latin-American equivalent of the Champions League.
"The signing of Wendell is an important transfer for Bayer 04 Leverkusen as part of our long-term strategy. We always said we want to strengthen our squad in a targeted manner. Wendell exactly suits our plans and we have already completed the deal using a buy-out clause that was due to run out on Saturday," said Bayer 04 managing director Michael Schade in commenting on the agreed deal with the 20-year-old.
Wendell sees the move to Bayer 04 Leverkusen as the logical next step in his career: “Bayer 04 has an excellent reputation in Brazil after the large number of signings in the past. I also had a long talk with my team captain Zé Roberto who played for Bayer 04 for years. He advised me to make the move as he raved about his time at Leverkusen.
