Bayer 04 have signed the Mexico international Andrés Guardado. The 27-year-old joins the Werkself on loan from Spanish top-flight club Valencia to the end of the current campaign. Bayer 04 have the option to buy Guardado who has 99 caps to date for his country and can play in a defensive or offensive role on the left.
“Andrés Guardado is a very experienced player. He was a regular first choice at Valencia, he played for his club in the Champions League last season and is an established player in his national team. Andrés meets our job profile based on his versatility. We are convinced he can give our team a boost,” said Bayer 04 sporting director Rudi Völler in response to the transfer.
Following the obligatory medical, the 1.69 metre tall Guardado signed for the Werkself on Thursday in the presence of Völler and Bayer 04 managing director Michael Schade. Afterwards, Andrés was clearly impressed with his new club: “The offer from Leverkusen was a great opportunity for me to make a new start. The Bundesliga has a fantastic reputation in Spain. It’s something very special for me to get the chance to play in this great European league after my time in the Primera Division. Bayer 04 have been a top team in Germany for years and they’ve also made their mark in the Champions League. So I’m happy the move has gone through,” explained Guardado.
