The South Korean Seung-Woo Ryu completed his medical at the BayArena on Wednesday and he is set to join the Werkself training camp in Portugal in January. Ryu joins on a season-long loan from South Korean first division FC Jeju United. Bayer 04 have the option to sign Ryu on a permanent deal after that.
The 5 feet 7 inch, 20-year-old forward made a name for himself in this summer’s U20 World Cup in Turkey when he scored against Cuba and Portugal to help South Korea progress to the knockout rounds. Unfortunately, he missed the rest of the tournament due to injury. Ryu has played for FC Jeju United up to now. He will get his first taste of life with the Werkself at the training camp in Portugal from 4 to 11 January. His fellow countryman Heung-Min Son will be able to help him enormously with language and integration issues.
Boenisch and Hilbert return
While Ryu went through his paces on the treadmill as part of the stamina tests, the Bayer 04 pros completed the first training session of the week ahead of the final Bundesliga fixture in 2013 in Bremen on Saturday. Good news for Werkself fans: Full backs Sebastian Boenisch and Roberto Hilbert are back. Hilbert completed an individual session with fitness coach Dr. Holger Broich just five weeks after tearing a ligament in his left knee. Boenisch, ruled out of the last four Bundesliga games with a knee injury, trained with rest of the squad.
Sidney Sam and Stefan Reinartz plus Philipp Wollscheid missed the Wednesday training session through injury. The central defender is currently working on his own in the Werkstatt. The 15 outfield players included Malcolm Cacutalua. The U23 defender was last in the Leverkusen first team squad for the Eintracht Frankfurt match.
