Bayer 04 have signed the Greece U-19 European Championship runner-up Konstantinos Stafylidis. The 19-year-old left back from PAOK Saloniki has agreed a five-year-deal with Leverkusen from 1 June 2013. Both clubs agreed not disclose the details of the transfer.
“With this investment in the future, we have once again acted in the style of Bayer 04 Leverkusen by convincing young and highly-talented players to commit to our club. In spite of his young age, Konstantinos Stafylidis is already one of the key players at PAOK. We are convinced he will prove to be a hit when he joins us with another year’s experience under his belt,” explained Bayer 04 managing director Wolfgang Holzhäuser.
Bayer 04 have succeeded in beating off European opponents in the race for defensive specialists. “We certainly weren’t the only ones interested in the lad. Stafylidis was on the wish list of a number of clubs after his performances last season and a successful U-19 championship. We’re glad he’s opted to join us,” added sporting director Rudi Völler.
