Sami Hyypiä (38) and Sascha Lewandowski (40), previously the Werkself U-19 coach, have been appointed to manage the Bayer 04 Leverkusen first team with immediate effect at least until the end of the season. They take over from Robin Dutt (47) and his assistant coaches Damir Buric (47) and Marco Langner (42), who were released from their duties following yesterday’s 2-0 defeat at home to SC Freiburg.

“We had to act and make the change to give us new momentum in achieving our target for the season of qualifying for Europe,” declared Bayer 04 managing director Wolfgang Holzhäuser. Sporting director Rudi Völler explained: “We’re looking for the Hyypiä/Lewandowski team to get us back on track and give us a boost. The first team know what they’ve got to do. Our ambitions at Bayer 04 are higher and we need to revive our campaign.“

Sami Hyypiä, with 105 caps for Finland, a Champions League winner’s medal and all his coaching badges, takes over as manager in his first coaching role: “I know the players and I’ve got full confidence in them. Sascha Lewandowski and I want to turn an unsettled side that has failed to perform to its ability in recent games into a team that can get Bayer 04 Leverkusen back to winning ways.” Hyypiä said it is clearly an advantage he has been able to get to know the structure of the club and the character of the players over the past three years. The former central defender has long been credted with having the ability to be able to think and act like a coach.

Sascha Lewandowski joins “Team Hyypiä” as the next step in his coaching career, which started in 2007 when he took over the Bayer 04 Leverkusen U-19 side. Lewandowski has also been involved in the running the Kurtekotten academy: “I believe I’m capable of stepping up to the Bundesliga and, of course, I know our club inside out. We want to work together to make a change and get the team back on track in the search for success.”
