Anyone who saw the incident at the Olympic Stadium, or on TV, could immediately make an assumption about the extent of Sidney Sam’s injury . An MRI scan on Sunday morning confirmed the worse fears: Sam suffered a torn muscle in his left thigh in the match at Hertha BSC.
The Germany international is ruled out for the next few weeks and he is unavailable for Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Manchester United.
Sam picked up the injury in a collision with Hertha’s Tolga Cigerci in the opening minutes of the game in Berlin. The winger has made a significant contribution to the Werkself success in the current campaign with seven goals and five assists. “Sidney’s injury is bad news,” said Rudi Völler but the Bayer 04 sporting director was defiant in view of Wednesday night’s big match against Manchester United at the BayArena. “It’s the biggest game of all the matches in our Champions League campaign. We need to get stuck in and give 100 per cent despite Sam being ruled out.
